UPDATE: After using this device for a year, there is one glaring problem that negates the strengths of the device - it leaves you behind bright halo around the corners of the image. This problem is more common when scanning negatives than color slides and at first I thought it might be due to the lens I was using, but after using 3 separate lenses on 2 different 35mm SLRs it became clear that the Corner brightening was not enough . from the scanner. At this point I decided to test the scanner, by inserting the negative halfway into the light box and found that the halo stays at the edges of the scan area regardless of the film. with orientation. Gently applying window cleaner and wiping with a lint-free cloth improved image clarity somewhat, but haloing was as bad as ever. Note that disassembling the film scanner will void your warranty. I have a lot of experience in electronics maintenance and assembly and was very comfortable with the actions I took and also very comfortable with the voiding of my warranty, but you might not want to do any of that. The only control over the image itself is the brightness, which can be easily adjusted in a sub-menu. The camera in the device takes a picture in about 5 seconds, so the longest part of the process is loading the trays. The digital picture quality is excellent. The device is rated at 8MP, and devices as low as 5MP are only a few dollars cheaper. That was the main argument for the device, as I find €13 for an additional 3 MP to be quite reasonable. After converting the slides, I was pleased to find that the image contained no digital artifacts other than what you would expect from 8MP. In practice, you notice quirks and anomalies in the source material long before you notice any digital signs, giving you a very accurate reproduction of the original photo. The light coming through the slide or negative is pleasantly bright, resulting in a sharp and accurate conversion. The best part is that the device works without being connected to a computer. The device has a small built-in memory, but supports standard SD and SDHC cards. The good thing is that you can convert materials, you don't need to worry about the PC capture process, and when you're done, just pop the card into your computer and capture images with ease. I gave the device four stars because the case feels a bit cheap, but as long as you don't touch it and throw it away, there's nothing to worry about.
