Review on Dorman 689 200 Camshaft Synchronizer by Jerry Olson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It sounded like a bad elevator that would quiet down

My 2001 Jeep Cherokee had a ticking noise that no one could find. It sounded like a bad lift that got quieter as we warmed up. After examining the entire idle engine with a mechanic's stethoscope, the noise was localized to the lower, middle portion of the engine. The only thing that is in this area is the cam syncronizer and the oil pump. When the synchronizer was pulled out, the oil pump drive pin was worn, and the gear that meshes with the cam gear was also worn. The new synchronizer fitted perfectly and came with a plastic jig used to set the synchronizer time. This part is necessary because Dorman and all aftermarket synchronizers lack the factory toothpick hole used to set synchronizer timing. This completely eliminated the ticking and it remained quiet for several hundred kilometers.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
