This tool is very well made. I'm sure he will be my best friend during the growing season as I walk around the property. It's 1/8" stainless steel from bottom to tip. Real wood handle, looks like oak. The wood handle feels perfect. It's sanded very smooth, but I don't think it was a protective layer. I'll sand it lightly and then dip it in a quart of oil based polyurethane.That should protect it in case I ever forget and leave it in the wet mud for a day or two.This sheath will last as long as the knife itself.This is a very heavy thick leather with strong rivets. That doesn't make them cheap and flimsy by any means. I hate when every knife comes with a flimsy sheath. That's half the tool! I'll probably cover the sheath with mink oil or warm beeswax. I'm always looking for easy ways , to protect tools, if you need any of these I would definitely say you need it.
