Review on Mackie Food Scale: Easy Automatic Nutrition Calculator for Perfect Portion Control and Calorie Counting by Kelli Palmer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Nice looking scale with good features but not for accurate measurements.

So I bought this scale and enjoyed using it to weigh food while cooking. The other nutritional extras are good, but the main reason I got it was for the cooking. So today I tried to make pesto from scratch. The recipe is: 100g basil 40g pine nuts 100g grated Parmesan Reggiano/Parmesan cheese 20g Pecorino Romano cheese 100ml extra virgin olive oil 1 clove of garlic 5g coarse salt. on the scales and tare. Then I put some basil leaves in it and the weight didn't change! So I took off the bowl, put it back on and recalibrated. Then I put the leaves in and the weight jumped to 12g and it STAYS there after I put 10 more leaves in. Eventually it went to the retarder and I think it finally got to about 50g. Now with the salt. It needs to have an auto-calibration feature so it doesn't detect small weight gains. It only rose to 2g after I put a teaspoon of salt on the device. It's definitely NOT 2g! More like 5g! He did better with pine nuts, but I think he falls short on very light objects (where they are added in successive amounts like leaves or grains of salt) and tends to underestimate the total per scale. I may have come across a defective one, but if that's the case with the scale, I think it'll come back. Too bad too, because I love the backlit screen and bonus power features. But if it doesn't fulfill its main function as a measuring tool, then I can't use it in the kitchen.
