Temperature changes all the time

I would prefer this thermometer to a traditional butt thermometer. However, I cannot get the same reading twice. I hold it at a distance of 3-5 cm from the ear canal and remove the annoying hair. The reading varies greatly from a cold dog to an overheated dog from one reading to the next. Good concept but needs improvement.
