If you own a BMW E46 will you ever find your engine smoking due to a leaking valve cover gasket. A factory installed soft, flexible seal will become a hard plastic seal after a few years and will no longer seal. It usually exits the rear passenger side (exhaust), oil drips onto the hot exhaust, causing odor first and then most likely smoke. The dealer will pay you back about $500 for this repair, but with a few simple tools you can do it yourself in about an hour for less than $50. Search for videos on YouTube. It's really very simple. The seal itself fits perfectly and Fel-Pro is the leader in seals, they have been around for many, many years so quality is not an issue. Don't let the dealer tell you you need an official BMW seal, that's nonsense. You may also need the Fel-Pro ES 72490 Gasket Kit to get the job done. These are 15 gaskets that go over the bolts that hold the valve cover in place. They'll probably be fine, but since you removed them, it's a good idea to replace them now. So save some money and do this repair yourself. Think about what you could buy with the money you just saved!
