Review on πŸ“» Enhanced DMR/Moto TRBO Ham Radio MD-380 by TYT by Mark Marcellus

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent radio, best in radios

Well the last one I ordered and bought from Revain lasted a day. After some hesitation I bought another one. It has so many great reviews all over the internet. Everyone convinced me, my last one was an accident. This one impresses me. I live in southeastern Wisconsin. Yesterday I spoke to a gentleman in Dallas, Texas and one on the Isle of Man near Scotland. Today I was speaking to a cell phone in Chatanooga, Tennessee. and a man in Michigan. The sound quality is phenomenal! Sounds like there's a person nearby. Unfortunately, the standard radio doesn't really tell you who you're talking to, call sign, name or even what frequency. It almost takes an mdtoolz hack. Unfortunately, the hack no longer has a volume bar (you don't really need it) or a display backlight control. However, it does show the call sign, name and frequency of the person you are talking to. Ugh, the first radio was from a single vendor sold by Revain. The second radio came from a completely different seller at a higher price! Guess what! Both radios were packaged exactly the same, by TYT. And none of them contained the advertised programming software! I was only able to get the software from the Radioddity website and that software is owned by Tytera and not the TYT website as mentioned by Revain. Once programmed, the configuration file is referred to (by fans) as a code plug. The code plug software isn't like Chirp or RT Systems where they use spreadsheets and the programming is fairly easy. No, the Tytera software seems to be based on a relational database. I'm temporarily using a friend's code plugin and am creating a very complex spreadsheet with 11 worksheets (tabs) from his code plugin. Then I write my own configuration file, uh code plaug, specifically for my radio.

Pros
  • Solid build
Cons
  • Nothing here
