I was looking at how to use an extruder to do what they call "Retro Caines". They're surprisingly easy and will save you tons of time. Watch some videos. I really like two ways to do this trick. The first style I tried was a double CD, then I did a single. There are two tricks here: Make sure your tone is warm. Your hands will appreciate it and the edges of the extruded clay won't fray. Second, use a smaller disc, I used a small square and behind it, inside the extruder, I placed a disc with large holes. Both methods will work, but you need to make sure your clay is well prepared. I have two syringe type extruders and they hurt my hands and crush my fingers when I use them. Spend the extra money on sets A through D because it's value for money!
