My Explorer had both types of connectors but my trailer had the old 4" type and one side didn't work. The test showed power on the wire but the trailer lights were not working. I assumed the fault was because the Ford 4-out was thicker and I had to work on making the connection. I decided to buy a 7 to 4 output adapter to see if it would help. This works for both the 7-pin explorer connector and the 4-pin trailer connector. The LED showing the action of the turn signals was a cool bonus. While this didn't fix the trailer lighting issue, it did make the wiring a lot easier for me.
