I wanted to buy a slicer from a chain store but there were too many complaints. It came in 2 sizes. I've seen this one - actually DO NOT NEED 2 sizes - slice small and large melons with ease. You can use it to cut the cake (there is a hole in the middle, but tube cakes don't have that problem). The hole is a bit big for apples I think. Pineapple should work. Any slicer you get MUST have stainless steel blades or durable blades. This one is good for slicing watermelon - don't get much harder. My husband had to wiggle it a bit to make it work and then it had great discs. I could then cut off the rind - if I wanted to bother.
