This hitch extension is "adjustable" because it has two holes on the receiver's male end and two holes on the female end. Depending on how you insert this extension into your car (hole one or two) and how you insert a bike rack or whatever into the "female" end (hole one or two), there is some adjustment as to how far You can get extensions. . In theory. I was hoping to use the SMALLEST number of extensions to get about 7 inches of extension. I had to lengthen my Thule T2 bike rack just enough to remove a Jeep tire that is larger than the factory tire. I can use whichever hole this extension places furthest in my jeep (so the "male" of this extension is adjustable). Unfortunately, I couldn't use the deepest hole on the "female" end of this extension because there is only about 2 inches between that deeper hole and the inner ledge where the inner square bar is welded to the outer square bar. It's hard to describe, but basically my Thule bike rack is the back of this extension before the holes line up with the deepest hole in this extension. So. I suppose you could slide it onto my bike rack? However, in hindsight I wouldn't trust a bike rack that has so little metal behind the holes - just not enough to carry the load. no I think this extension could have been better designed to only have ONE hole on the "female" end but slightly in the middle between the two it currently has. I doubt there are many racks that could use the deepest hole in the "female" side of this extension. One more comment. I read some reviews criticizing the welds. I'm not a welder, but from my observation the welds appear smooth and even all around. I have to say the metal is a bit flimsy compared to other extensions I've seen. I think it's quite normal for two bike racks and I use it for that. When I was going to transport 4 bikes I was afraid that this might break and for that reason I am aiming for another extension. Conclusion: If you only transport 2 bikes and are satisfied with the possibility of widening the hole in the "female" part of this extension, I recommend it. The price is reasonable and the built-in stop bolt is really good (especially if you buy the extra stop bolt). If you need a very short extension, this probably won't work. If you plan to transport 4 bikes I don't know if that's strong enough. I use it for this from time to time, but I'm a little worried about it.
