After NECA has gone from Godzilla ownership, G-Fan's reaction has been divided . The company's good history of owning Godzilla has left some fans with a sour taste, although of late it has become more consistent in producing high-quality action figures. Thankfully, this figure follows that trend, and despite some initial flaws, NECA's production of Godzilla figures is a smash that even those who are still jaded can appreciate. Advantages: a.) Very nice detail. The spines are handled with care, and even the shape of the top of the head is mostly correct. You can view this figure from afar and easily see the conceived plan. I was afraid that they would take inspiration from their Godzilla action figure from the video game and recreate the 1994 model with minor modifications (for the record, the Godzilla video game was a repaint of an already inferior 1984 action figure with modified plates and new paint, a choice that confuses most G-fan collectors for several reasons). Thankfully, this is a brand new sculpture, and an impressive one at the same time. Thanks to NECA for taking fans' criticism and constantly improving its quality. I've been really surprised at the consistently high quality of their figures since the 1962 version. b) Nice to see another Heisei design. I was afraid we wouldn't see this suit given the 1994 number and the disappointing 1984 NECA release. However, given the popularity of this suit, I understand why they decided to customize it. c) The inclusion of an atomic breath effect is a welcome development, as was the case with the 1964 and 1962 suits, as well as other color options for 2019. , 2001 and 2016.d.) Box art - Noriyoshi Orai's awesome poster for Godzilla vs. Biollante, a personal favourite. Ohrai's work can also be seen on the 1994 and 1995 figure boxes. Collectors can stack them neatly on top of each other for a poster collage. e.) Paint job well done. The eyes are the correct brown instead of the often mistaken yellow seen in later Heisei incarnations. The skin is a standard charcoal gray with a slight green tinge, similar to the SHMA pattern. There are also dark accents between the tail to add depth. The spines are bone white with the same dark gray in the middle. Color adds texture. f.) The tail is long and strong, but flexible. Godzilla can hold its own without sacrificing articulation. g.) Given that there is a general understanding among Kaiju fans that NECA is an affordable but (generally) high quality alternative to SH Figuarts/Monsterarts, this fills a niche for the 1989 6"-7"figure as SHMA is much larger and doesn't scale well compared to other monsters in his lineup. h.) This figure actually arrived a few days early. It's nice to see quick delivery, although a supplement is to come. Cons: a.) The character's box had a puncture on the side of the left leg that was not tied down. It seems to be related to the manufacturer and/or shipping company, not the seller (who seems to have put a lot of effort into the packaging). It's not very noticeable, but likely to be a problem for those building the art box. b.) The mouth is on a small hinge so the center of the angle is just behind the tongue and not next to the throat. As a result, the jaw looks dislocated when opened too far. Closed and half-open positions aren't bad, but the mouth doesn't look very good fully open. Unfortunately, the jaw has to be wide open for the atomic breath to fit in. c) Minor snag: Forearms look a little lanky when not flexed. Not much to rant about, but they do look weird from certain angles when stretched out. This may be because the skin looks tighter than on the actual suit. d.) When NECA announced they were losing their license, most people knew that this suit and 2003's Godzilla would be last in line for a while. Consequently, there was a sharp jump in price from the original $29.99. Luckily the seller's price wasn't as bad as I expected ($38), prices went up to $45 elsewhere. If you're considering buying, make your decision quickly before speculators drive prices even higher. out of line. There's an attempt to create a swirling effect, which is also a nice touch, although it seems a bit overdone. b) Given that I previously mentioned the inclusion of another Heisei design, which was a good inclusion, it would be fair to point out the issue. with the lineage as a whole that this character could benefit from: another kaiju. While the figure is a great addition on its own, NECA's focus on Godzilla alone in this line is disappointing. While they have some awesome Monster King sculpts, collectors will end up with shelves of the same character. Some might only collect incarnations of Godzilla, but given the context that the franchise is perhaps best known for kaiju fighting, it's odd that NECA left out other characters. The only three other monsters in this series are 2019's Mothra and 2019's Rodan (the latter being fairly rare and inexpensive), and King Kong, whose original designs are inspired by the 1933, 2005, and 2016 films. If you want Biollante or King Ghidorah paired with this Godzilla for movie-accurate viewing, SHMA is your best bet, which many people don't have the money for. It might not have been so dizzying if it wasn't for the upcoming "Biollante Bile" variant, where this form was splattered with fluorescent green paint. An interesting concept, but meaningless without Biollante. It may have been a licensing issue or NECA had no faith in other monsters, but this remains a missed opportunity for both the company and collectors. most of her other Godzilla characters. Personally, I would place it third or fourth in their lineup after the 2014, 2001 and maybe 1954 models. In general, an excellent indicator for those who follow this line. 8.5/10
