Unreliable or doesn't work at all

These machines are either unreliable or don't work at all. I dug a well in the area marked dark blue on the attached map and came across a granite boulder over 1.5 m in diameter at a depth of only 2.1 m. The machine could not pick it up. Machine diagram shows low density material at depths down to 15m.
