Review on πŸ”Œ DB Electrical 410-48232 Starter for Subaru Forester & Impreza - Manual Transmission Compatibility by Jae Newton

Sounds quieter than the original starter but works perfectly

2001 Forester, 2.5 L/t, 225,000 miles. The starter comes in a white box in a large cardboard box. Inside is a paper-wrapped motor and a sheet of test specifications. Find a YouTube video or use a Haynes manual (or similar) to replace the starter yourself. First disconnect the battery ground (-). A 12mm bolt holds the battery + wire to the solenoid and a wire lug (which can be awkward to remove) holds the low voltage wire. The bolts on the replacement starter solenoid are not metric, but the threads are fine for the old bolt. Only one screw needs to be removed. You don't need to remove the bolt that connects the magneto to the starter, just make sure it's tight. Two 14mm bolts hold the starter to the vehicle. The easiest way to get to the top screw is to remove the rear half of the air cleaner, remove the three clips and two 10mm screws to loosen it. Remove the driver's side air cleaner bracket (two 12mm screws). Sliding the air filter backwards gives you easy access to the top 14mm bolt. Both the top and bottom 14mm screws can be tightened. I don't have air tools and needed a pry bar to get leverage to undo them. I had to crawl out from under the car. I did this work in a garage and was able to do it without jacking up the car or removing the tires. The new starter works great as a replacement, although it sounds completely different than the original starter that came with the car. This new one is much quieter. A very small note: the gears on the pinion shaft were not as deep as the original starter, maybe 1/8 inch. Due to the wear and tear on my old starter, only the front part engages. Flywheel anyway, so it shouldn't matter.
