After buying two manual ice crushers that fell apart after a month, I decided to spend the money and buy something more durable and with a motor. I wouldn't call it an 'ice crusher', it definitely 'shaves' the ice into crumbled snow. You can open the device and adjust the razor blade to make the ice cream more like chips. I'm not sure if this will void the warranty or not. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK: To do this you will need to remove the two small Phillips screws securing the safety switch and underneath the Phillips screw holding the ice chute to the front of the unit. There is a hex head screw (4mm) on the underside of the chute which needs to be loosened, after which the chute is removed. Then there are two hex screws securing the blade, loosen these screws and slide the blade forward so it protrudes. more. This allows the machine to produce larger chunks of ice. Tighten the screws and reassemble the machine (make sure you position the safety switch correctly so the machine can turn on when the handle is lowered). The effect of creating a lot more chaos when the ice comes out of the car, so be prepared. I've only used it once since this mod, but I'm happy with the results. However, I have yet to find out if this will cause problems with the motor, the blade, or the overall safety of the equipment. Edit/Update: After about a year of use the machine is still working great and I'm very happy with it. However, I had a problem when I got "greedy" and tried to adjust the ice cutter further than the first time. It worked fine a couple of times, then the blade "slipped off". It wasn't a catastrophic failure, but the blade moved outward (due to centrifugal force) and began scratching the inside of the aluminum cover. When I think about it, the work was a little louder when it happened. I ended up having a mouthful of aluminum shavings mixed with ice, which isn't great. I returned the blade to a slightly extended position and also applied some blue Loctite to the threads of the setscrews. That was about 6 months ago and I haven't had any problems since. One note: I wipe the machine down with a rag after each use, but there is still a slight buildup of "dirt" in the hinge area of the handle. . I sometimes use a chopstick and cleaning cloth to wipe it off. Also, the unit will slowly leak water even when wiped, so keep a rag underneath or store in a place that will not be exposed to water. And finally I used a dremel to cut off the front of the unit, added two clips on opposite sides of the ejection hole and discharged the ice into a ziplock bag. It seems to work much better than the "tablet" that comes with the device.
