Good shock - a few notes on installation

Bought two pieces hoping they will be sold 1 piece as it turns out. The shock absorbers arrived quickly, in the original packaging and without damage. I was a bit worried they wouldn't fit properly even though they were advertised for my 1994 Ram 4WD pickup, but they actually fit and worked well. I make a couple of comments that distracted me a bit while trying to install. Firstly, the shock absorbers that were on the truck did not have rubber bushings, only plastic washers. When I installed grommets on either side of the top bracket, there wasn't enough thread space to thread the nut. What I had to do was get the truck off the jack and lower it to load the suspension to compress the rubber so I had room for the nut. Second, the mother herself could only spin freely. 2/3 of its length sank onto the top bolt before it looked like it was cross threaded and would not finger tighten. After looking around a bit and talking to my neighbor, we decided that the top of the nut would be clamped (or possibly "pinned") to clamp the bolt rather than using a nylon insert in the nut like I did had seen it before, or a lock nut. In the end when I put the nut on the bolt and started tightening it with a wrench I couldn't tell the exact difference in resistance and everything worked fine. This is a very little used car though, I've had it since it was new 22 years ago and it's only got 65,000 miles so I'd say the past performance has been a lot better than the 22 year old shock it will likely to be useless for most people.

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • Not happy with everything
