Review on TRENDnet Concurrent Simultaneous Multifunction TEW 814DAP by Jeremy Gorsage

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Versatile but not the best AP

You need versatility. Unfortunately, my experience using it as a hotspot has been less than great. While I didn't have to restart it frequently, as some other reviews have explained, there are times when it loses and reconnects several times a second, requiring Wi-Fi on connected devices to be cycled off and back on to get it to reconnect repair. This behavior seems to be common with iPhone 6 and later (11ac compatible) and somewhat common with the Galaxy S5 (also 11ac compatible). The range is also disappointing to say the least. Even a wall (nothing drastic, no concrete, lead, wiring, etc.) between you and the device will drastically reduce the 11ac speed, which is inconsistent with my experience with TRENDnet's full 11ac routers. I factory reset and re-setup the access point in case something went wrong with my configuration (WPA2-PSK with AES encryption on both bands, 5GHz 11ac only, 2.4GHz 11n only). All of these issues are related to the latest firmware and I could not find any open source firmware that works on this access point. I'm hoping to reassign the device as a client, which I assume will perform better, but for now I need to use it as a hotspot and don't recommend it for that purpose. If anyone knows of any open source firmware that will work with this access point I would appreciate it if you could let me know. UPDATE: I've tried using the device as a repeater, but clients can't connect to it due to an authentication error, whether manually entering the password or using the WPS setup button. The device uses the same password as the base access point and connects with no problem, so there's no excuse for this relay not being able to authenticate the clients itself. I can't even tell if the feature works as intended. The rating has gone up from three to two stars.
