I use my cryptocurrency mining rigs with 16GB USB sticks. I recently bought a bunch of 16GB m.2 drives so I can run them from the m.2 slot and the USB dongle doesn't stick out of the motherboard. Since these m.2 drives are 42mm in diameter, you need to use a screw and nut. to attach it. There is a fixed screw mount for the 2280m2 SSD, which is easier to use. After installing the 42mm drive, I plug it into a USB hub along with a USB stick. I then boot into Clonezilla and clone the USB to m.2. It's much easier than opening up the computer and installing in an m.2 slot, especially when you need to mirror multiple hard drives. I highly recommend this product.
