These little modules run on the Espressif ESP8285 chipset, not the 8266, but it does add a bit more functionality, but with most programs you'll never realize you're running a newer version. What makes these modules great for prototyping and development on the 8266 platform is that they have an integrated USB connector and a programming reset pin, so you don't need to buy a separate stand to use ESP-01- to write modules. The boards are cheap enough to make great one-way access points when you need a "mini-router" to host other IoT projects, and the pass-through connections make it easy to use GPIO pins. If you program with the Arduino IDE, you'll find that all of the standard 8266 examples (web server, DNS responder, etc.) will work, and in fact, several Wemos-specific examples are available as well. Great little board!
