Review on Efficiently control emissions with Standard Motor Products CP416 Canister Purge Solenoid by Kyle Robinson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It has been working well for almost 2 years

First of all, as many have said, this is NOT a flushing magnet. This is a purge flow sensor. It is located between the purge valve and the engine. It detects when fuel vapor is flowing from the canister to the engine (e.g. when the purge valve is open). I kept getting an insufficient flush flow error code on my truck. I checked the diagnostic flow chart in the Ford manual and found that the purge flow sensor had failed. I've tried cleaning it (it's just a thermistor and sometimes debris builds up on it that interferes with proper reading) but to no avail. Okay, that's a new sensor. Well this truck is over 20 years old and an OEM part would cost a lot more. I don't like non-OEM parts, especially emissions control or fuel injection parts, but I also didn't want to pay more than $100 for the entire vacuum line/sensor assembly. I decided to bet $24 on it. Installation was easy. I swapped out the vacuum lines while I was there, more for peace of mind than anything else. I cleared the codes and ran some tests with the new sensor. Since I have a bi-directional scan tool, I can open the purge valve by controlling the voltage on the flow sensor. Everything was checked and since then the sensor has been working perfectly. Like I said, I'm not usually a fan of aftermarket parts, but this one has worked great for almost two years.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive
