I am a classic car, well into my 60's and a third generation craftsman. My father and grandfather had oil stones, and through my own choice and also through my involvement in the metal trade, I acquired over a dozen different oil stones, some of which suffered from neglect. I was torn between this product and a diamond plate but settled on this Norton Flattening Stone. I've been surprised at how well this thing works - and pretty quickly. My first test was on an Indian oil stone and I used it dry with no water. It was easy to see the diagonal groves filling up with dust from the Indian stone. The grooves are easy to clean with an old shoe brush. By the way, all oil stones were pre-cleaned with brake cleaner before grinding. I make a lot of custom stones for those hard to reach places and this leveling stone does wonders for leveling the surface after roughing it with a diamond wheel. After my dry test, I did most of the work with water and a few drops of dish soap in an old steel baking pan. If you work in your wife's kitchen sink, you better protect it from sand ruining porcelain or stainless steel. There seems to be some obsession in the level of flatness comments. Seems weird to me, but still. Oil and water stones are meant to be hand sharpened - this is not a fine surface finish, and the benefit here is that the craftsman (if he or she chooses) can use a little "English" on one side or the other of the stone . To each his own, I think. Cons: It comes in a crappy thin plastic box that doesn't allow any significant moisture to escape. If they must use plastic, use the correct "alloy".
