Good product - Precise current control a little finicky

I bought this load tester to test the built in 5V switching regulator circuits on PCBs I build. The regulator on my board is only 1-1.25A and its current limit is around 1.3A so this tester is over the top but about $15 more than a 35W unit and I figured it would be nice to have a more versatile device. I have tested the device with a power supply of 12V, 32A up to 12A (144W) and it works fine. The fan is almost always on when there is power. However, the fan is very quiet, so that's not a problem for me. When testing my board I only had to use the current fine adjustment knob to get around 1.5A. The display reads the current in hundredths (0.01) of amps and I found it difficult to set an exact number like 1. 25 A. It is possible, however, if you are very careful. If you need to make accurate current limit measurements at this resolution, you can try the 35W models. I checked the accuracy of the current measurement at 1.00 A on the meter's display, my Fluke 115 measures 1.010 A. At 12.0 V, the voltage measurement is about 0.1 V lower compared to the Fluke Meter. At 5000V at Fluke, the device measured 4.96V. Voltage measurements were taken at the screw terminals to which the power supply was connected. As such, it's a very worthwhile addition to my dyno, especially for the price. If the current fine adjustment was a little less sensitive I would give it 5 stars.

Pros
  • handy item
Cons
  • a little wrinkled
