I have this configuration to power a pair of bookshelf speakers on my desk and a powered subwoofer. I've been looking for a cheap desktop speaker amp with a coaxial input and a subwoofer for a long time. The form factor and specs of this device were attractive enough to pull the trigger. The first impression of the device is good. The metal body feels solid and smooth, with no rough edges and a nice finish. The volume wheel is also made of metal and the turning steps are tactile. However, the distance between the ports on the back is a bit cramped. If you are using a coaxial input and a subwoofer output, make sure the cable connectors are not too thick. I use Monoprice cables and they fit just right. The same applies to the banana plugs on the speaker terminals. If they are too wide, they will touch and short out when voltage is applied to the cable. I don't need a lot of power for my speakers. I use Wavecrest HVL-1 speakers, 8 ohm impedance. They're about 3 feet from me and I usually keep 30 to 45 on the volume knob depending on how loud the source is. The volume control is fully digital, which is a plus as it completely eliminates channel imbalance at very low volumes. When I used my previous amp, which was all analog, I couldn't play my speakers low without one speaker getting louder than the other. The sound of the amplifier is very clear. No distortion or interference that I hear. The noise level is audible to me when playing audio. If you sit next to the speakers in complete silence, you will hear a faint hiss. The designers also seem to have noticed this and have implemented some controls for it. If the device does not detect any sound when using a digital source, the hiss will disappear completely. When a signal is detected, the hiss will return when the audio is played. I was able to test this by lowering the windows volume to 2 and playing/pausing the tracks. Thankfully, there's no delay in sound reproduction after a long period of silence, as is the case with subwoofers that go to sleep when not in use. Noise is always audible when using the analog input. It doesn't get louder or quieter as the volume changes. That's really my only complaint about this device. It doesn't bother me if I'm sitting more than 4 feet from the speakers, so it shouldn't be a problem for in-room listening. Plus it's good value for money and worth a look.
