This small and relatively expensive item connects quickly to a standard car battery. Once you connect, a 30-second countdown will begin. Now start your engine and exit the menu to see the battery percentage and charge voltage. The first digit tells you whether you need to charge the battery or start the charging system, and the second digit tells you how well your charging system is working. It recently helped me come out in front of a new 70% charged battery that barely had enough power to flip my Subaru Outback Wagon in the freezing -6 degrees Fahrenheit. I used a 6 amp charge for 3 hours and it solved my problem. Charging at 2 amps barely registers in the cold conditions I typically use for charging. I have found that this charging method increases battery life by 2-3% per hour in milder conditions. If you have an internal battery such as in older Chevy models, you can use tape on the battery bug wires to make contact and follow the same procedure. I would not recommend leaving this unit connected to the battery as you will cause it to malfunction by exposing it to the elements and engine temperature. It is best used as an intermittent tool to assess battery health and save time while helping you avoid potential problems. Be careful when working with hot batteries as they will create sparks if you cross wires, which is easy to do if you are in a hurry or not paying enough attention to what you are doing.
