Works great in low water

We have a 5 gallon fiddler crab aquarium. They need water and land, so the aquarium is set up that way. The water side is a few inches deep and is in the far corner of this side. The water rises just above the level of the sponge and still filters the water perfectly. Fiddler crabs are not very picky about clean water. We have one that lives to be around 2 years old which is unusual as they usually don't live more than a year in captivity. She likes to take food out of the sponge, so we know she filters things like the food that's given to her.
