Review on Optimal Sharpening Performance with Whetstone Sharpener and Flattening Kit by Richard Summerall

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very functional set

This is a great set of professional whetstones and with a little practice you can sharpen like a pro. I haven't needed a 400/1000 stone yet because I've never sharpened anything with so much wear or damage to the blade that would require this rough grind, but I'll probably need it when sharpening some old chisels. The finer grit stone is useful on either side for removing moderate wear and restoring the blade, while the leather strap is good for removing small burrs after sharpening and for polishing the blade. My sharpening stones arrive in good condition, however the leveling stone was quite badly damaged with a long corner broken off to its full length in the long dimension of the stone. The other sides can be used, but damage will shorten the life of the stone - more so for those who use it frequently, not for those like me who only use the set for their own knives and tools. However, it would be nice if it could be packaged better to avoid such damage. This is a very useful set that with a little care should last you a very, very long time (although I've never been able to get the angle guide to work properly - I may have used it on knives that were undersized). I've always been taught that a dull knife is much more dangerous than a very sharp dagger, as if too much force is used trying to cut a dull blade, a dull blade has a tendency to slip, a great help in avoiding this risk and a razor sharp edge just glides over most things.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
