Functional. I just don't like how it looks (but I bought it anyway. Weird).

Seemed like a good idea at the time. He's definitely holding test tubes. I have seen many lamp stands that I liked better than this one. Works well, just doesn't like the look. If you like his looks. Buy it. It's just a matter of personal taste.
