Installation can be difficult.

You might read reviews of the G5RV antenna and think this guy could be heaven or hell. My experience is that no matter how many changes I made, it just didn't work for me. My problems are probably only my problems and no generalization, first of all do not buy a G5RV antenna. The issues I had was that this particular product is exactly what it says it is but would require some tweaking to make it a permanent install. I have seen some higher quality G5RV antennas that are weather sealed top and bottom and have a built in balun where the coax meets the conductor line. to your coax. This is not surprising, since the photo clearly shows what you are dealing with. My problem was that I have some kind of local QRM/QRN that I just can't figure out where it's coming from other than it's outside of my house. It's 102 feet long and should match what QRN is looking for as I can switch between my 3 HF antennas and the noise can only be heard from the G5 and is loud enough to block any signal. I've experimented with all the things that can be experimented with. I had it at 30ft which is probably not high enough. I had 120 degree legs and that's important. If anyone were to ask me about this antenna system I would say that it would be best to cut the wire and make a 40m dipole out of it, leaving the 35ft conductor line for another project.

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • No performance
