I bought this camera for a friend on Black Friday last year. She wanted a good camera so she could learn how to take digital photos. At first the camera was good, the photos it took looked good and it worked well, especially for a beginner. That changed when she tried to use it in October of that year. She has used it several times, for Christmas, New Years and some birthdays, but when she tried it last month (October 2012) the camera would not turn on and the battery would not charge. After receiving a second battery (one from a friend's camera of the same model) I was convinced that the problem had to be with the battery as the friend's battery would turn the camera on and charge. without knowing that the warranty has expired. I called them and was told to ship the camera separately (and pay for shipping out of my own pocket) with no battery or accessories (they didn't tell me the battery was out of warranty at the time). After receiving the camera, which I was told was fully functional (as I already knew), the enclosed note said that I had to send in the battery and charger. The camera was poorly packaged when it was returned, the box was damaged and the touchpad that covers the screen is now in a bubble. When I called back I was told that the previous caller had been misinformed and that I should have sent the battery and charger along with the camera. Finally, when asked if I could get a replacement for what appeared to be a defective battery, the representative informed me that the battery was not considered an "accessory" of the camera and was therefore excluded from the warranty. This exclusion from the warranty is of little use. Sense, and I have filed a lawsuit against Nikon over it. After talking to other Nikon compact camera owners, it turned out that bad batteries are a fairly common problem and you can't count on batteries to last. So since the original battery failed (and others have had similar experiences), there is little point in buying another Nikon branded battery. Overall the camera was good while it worked, the lack of proper support from Nikon is truly appalling and is the reason I only gave this camera a one out of five. Note, however, that the battery exclusion applies to all Nikon cameras (at least that's what the rep told me).
