These are decent if not impressive binoculars in the traditional sense. But the close focus ability of an 18 inch screen is IMPRESSIVE! This "II" version has fully coated optics and delivers impressive images for such a small device. It's not bad for backyard bird watching and the like. 10x42 quality, but only in the sense that it doesn't magnify as much and isn't as bright in low light. After the comparison, I'd be quite happy with the Papilio as my only binoculars for what we use it for. The relief is with or quite comfortable without glasses and does not tend to darken when looking at the periphery. It also has a wide sweet spot. The small size and light weight are great. It's like a handheld stereo microscope that works remotely! It's absolutely perfect for observing butterflies, dragonflies, all kinds of bugs and flowers, as well as things like illuminated mineral specimens in museums and the like. It's an amazing piece of kit and IMO at the very highest level of 'bang for the buck'. I'll probably have to buy another one so we can share it on family trips to our town's zoo and peruse the live butterfly exhibit. In my opinion, the 6.5x version is a better choice due to less jitter, brighter vision, and a wider field of view. But that's just my preference, others may like 8.5x a little more. I wish they'd made it with a lens cap, although putting it in the included belt loop case is enough. I also wish the housing was a bit larger to allow the binoculars to fit in the housing when the eyecups are fully extended.
