Impressive Instrument: Electrical Testing

This is an impressive gauge. Numerous well thought-out functions for problem solvers and repairers. For starters I made sure it could work with rechargeable NiMH batteries (lower cell voltage). It comes with 2 disposable AAA batteries but I replaced the NiMH with no problem. It comes with an illustrated manual in English and Chinese. I like the stand out feature of the DC clamp ammeter, but other standard features work well too. All measurements are adjusted automatically. I ran some random accuracy checks. For example, a 110K 1% resistor measured 110.4K on both this and my other high-end DMM. The DC voltage measurements are exactly the same as my other more expensive digital meters. It has an auto power off feature after 20 minutes of inactivity. It will beep after 19 minutes as a warning that you can cancel the shutdown if you wish. It comes with a temperature sensor but also has a sensor built into the body of the tool that displays the ambient temperature in degrees F and C. Every detail seems to have been thought of with this tool. And now the most interesting thing - DC clamps. I have two AC current clamps but have never used the DC version. Wow it works so well and is a totally convenient way to measure DC current. I took it to the test bench and verified that it can actually measure DC current up to 1mA with clamps as advertised. Even photographed this amazing feature in action. Using a variable power supply, a rheostat, and a wired multimeter, I've proven to myself that DC current clamp measurements are very accurate at various auto-ranging levels. It's not entirely clear in the manual, but you need to press and hold the "SEL/ZERO" button in the constant current mode selection for a few seconds until you hear a beep and display "0000" for accurate readings, especially for very low currents. for example for small parasitic loads. This short first step should always be taken. Although the manual states a maximum DC current of 100A, I charged a 1.5kW 12V inverter to 1490W with two blow dryers and measured the input current at 142.8A. Subtract the base draw of the inverter from 1.6. And with the fans running, you get 141.2A at an input voltage of 12.5V = 1765 watts to the load itself. This corresponds to a net energy efficiency of 84%. It was quick and easy to take these measurements, which would otherwise be very difficult and disruptive. Pretty amazing. I can use this gauge to further detail my homemade solar backup system. The solar charge controller was found to be a continuous 21mA parasitic drain. If I could give this new meter more than 5 stars, I honestly would.
