I bought this because I hate throwing away bics and because I smoke I throw my lighter away all the time so I have to keep re-lighting it. This lighter is slightly heavier and larger than the Bic. The device requires the placement of a wick or something close to the circular lighting area, which is a much less efficient way of lighting but still works. Eventually the lighter will get very hot. The energy runs out pretty quickly. You have to turn it on several times a night. But it also loads fast. And it looks beautiful. I just got it so I have no idea how long it will be before it stops working. Hopefully the person who indicated it stopped working just got a lemon. I am grateful that there is a choice other than disposable or butane refills. Not sure if this would be acceptable in a checked suitcase. It will probably not be the case in hand luggage.
