Review on Black Vantec NexStar TX USB 3.0 Hard Drive Dock - Single Bay (NST-D328S3-BK) by Mike Hernandez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The hard drive dock is fast but cheap.

I bought this docking station to retrieve data from a desktop SATA drive on an old computer. The docking station was very easy to install and the user has the option of using a USB 2.0 connection or a much faster SATA connection to the host computer. A driver disk is included, but Windows 7 on my new computer didn't even need to boot up the hard drive to install it, which took seconds. The docking station is designed to connect laptop and desktop drives, SATA drives only. And here's the problem: the dock has a spring-loaded flap at the top that's large enough to load a large desktop drive; Smaller laptop drives easily fit through a rectangular slot at the top of the door. After four desktop drive insertions, the door handles fell loose and the door fell to the floor of the docking station. The device still works, but without the flap, the smaller laptop flipped drive only supports SATA connections. I'm giving this three stars because I could actually retrieve all of my data, but I'm not sure how long this device is rated to last. One of the five stars I asked Revain for was for "Noise". The resulting noise depends heavily on the inserted disc. The Hitachi drive I inserted made almost no noise; However, the old Samsung drive sounded like it would fall apart if left on for too long. This product is suitable for those who need a temporary solution to transfer data from an old computer hard drive once or twice. If you work on the computer and transfer data regularly, I would look for a more powerful model from another manufacturer.
