Review on AMACO High Fire Moist Stoneware Clay, 50 lb, Buff No. 46, Non-Toxic Brown Clay 45083X - Buy Online by Hannah Curi

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Not bad; Not good. UPDATE

After tossing 50 pounds of this clay in 2 to 4 pound increments to make beer mugs, I have the following observations: 1. The clay arrived in good condition and had the perfect moisture level for tossing. The clay is very fine-grained and of medium plasticity.3. As mentioned in other reviews, you will likely encounter air bubbles in any pug. Not much, but enough to cause some problems when throwing. These air pockets must be carefully wedged to eliminate them. I have not found this to be an issue with clay from other companies such as Laguna.4. Wedging is highly recommended anyway, as it's best to get the clay to move on its own, before attempting to center it on the wheel. Otherwise, the uneven moisture content of the clay can make centering and casting difficult, especially for an inexperienced person. This is especially true for this clay body. Overall I would rate this tone as average. Freshly harvested clay should be more even in consistency and free from air pockets. UPDATE: After tossing and pushing out another 50 pounds of this clay, I'm done with this one. There are too many air pockets in this clay. My extruded handles have gaps caused by this, and many of my discarded parts need careful editing to eliminate bubbles in the sound path, EVEN AFTER THE SPELL. For similar firing results without much effort, I recommend Laguna B-Mix, cone 5-6. This is a much better choice, although it's not currently ordered through Revain. especially for an inexperienced person. This is especially true for this clay body.
