If you frequently remove your front wheel (to put your bike in a car, for example) you'll need to add a third hand to help you with this one small spacer between fork legs and hub. But with practice it gets easier. The real danger is driving hours to the start of the trail only to realize you must have dropped the spacers in your driveway. For that reason, it's probably a good idea to always keep a few extra of these spacers in the glove box. So it's not as practical as hub end caps, but certainly workable and certainly cheaper than a new wheel.
