I bought this to use with my old netbook which doesn't have bluetooth. Since I'm only using Linux I wasn't sure if that would work, but the system recognized it immediately and showed the bluetooth control icon in the menu bar. From then on everything ran smoothly. Plugged into two different headsets, one was my own SB220 KickBot, as well as my Oontz Wedge bluetooth speaker, it works great and is a good deal for the price. I didn't have to use the installation CD that came with it, so I can't comment on that. But Linux Mint 13 Maya/Ubuntu 12.04.5 Precise Pangolin ran without any additional software.
