decibel meter works great! I used it on my mom and sister because they are talkative, joke around a lot, can't seem to hear themselves and are terribly loud. My sister's piercing, high-pitched laugh ("Ha!"): 95.7 dB at 5 feet! Wow! No wonder my ears hurt! My mom needs sound amplifiers so her "normal voice" is loud on her own. As she jokingly yelled at grumpy Santa Claus: 93.4dB from 5 feet away! They didn't know I hid the decibel meter, so I have to endure that noise level every day. (Not easy, let me tell you. But they do have their mental/physical flaws, so I can't always complain.) The great thing about a decibel meter is that you can turn it on and select a setting that measures the upper limit of the record , the maximum. Noise level and I can (I think?) be gone for a good 15 minutes before it shuts down. One thing, I wish it had a memory of what it recorded in case I don't get back to the meter in time and see how loud they are. I also filmed my mother playing with cutlery as she tossed it in the cutlery drawer: 118.5 dB at 1 foot! This time she knew I was using a decibel meter so she tossed the silverware very carefully. Otherwise, what can I say? It's easy to use, comes with a battery, fits comfortably in your hand, and is small enough to hide (at my arm's length). I'm glad I made this purchase. The only downside is perhaps how quietly it will measure. Even in the middle of the night when the loud ones are sleeping, I don't get below 32 dB in the bathroom even if I turn off the light, leave the room and close the door. As such, I wouldn't recommend it for measuring how quiet things will be. There is a high probability that it is not as sensitive as the expensive high quality decibel meter that you would expect from a product at such a low price. But even in the higher decibel range it's still fun!
