I have to say I'm not an expert on OBD2 scanners. I've bought a basic scanner in the past and it works great for clearing some general codes and giving me some basic info on the cause of the code. I use it when the engine gauge comes on the display. When I saw this scanner, I understood from the description that it has many more functions than my usual scanner. This allows you to download additional features from the Internet directly to the scanner. Since the first thing the scanner asks you about is when you plug it into the car's OBDII port, it's connecting to a Wi-Fi network, which was also the first issue I had with the scanner. It couldn't connect to any of the networks I have at home. I regularly use WiFi in my garage, and the car is between my home router and the garage, so there shouldn't be any connectivity issues. I had to turn on hotspot on my phone to finally connect. You will then be prompted to check for updates. He needed one so I started downloading it. The download was aborted several times because the internet connection was lost. I restarted the download each time until it finished. It showed four different apps that needed updating, but because the first one took so long I skipped it for now. The device comes with a USB cable, so I guess I can bring it inside and turn it on so it's closer to my router. Your car He asked me to select a car brand. I had an American Ford. MANUAL The manual contains very little information on how to use the gauge. Basically, it just helps you navigate the screens. THINKSCAN Plus This is the main screen that you will be taken to. I chose OBD. It discovered all visible logs and then showed me the functions available to me. I opened live data mode. He showed me many functions of my truck that I could learn. I had the ignition on but not the engine. To see one thing that doesn't require waiting for the engine to warm up to operating temperature, I selected engine RPM. I could see that what was on my meter was also shown on the meter in more detail. I was able to generate a diagnostic report listing all my problems and some basic information about the vehicle like VIN. I had the option to email the report, which I did. I received an email with a link to an online report. Additions to the Software. The main menu had a button for ThinkStore. When you go there, you will be told that you can choose 2 additional modules for free. The remaining modules cost $29.95 each. Resources. I was able to search for error codes, get training links and videos. Overall, I was a bit overwhelmed by the features on offer, so I think the price hike is worth it.
