Anyone who prints from PETG probably knows that PETG likes to get stuck on the hot end. Even if you don't have setbacks, PETG will still find a way. Due to some research on the internet I found these and decided to give it a try. The first caveat is that they don't always hold up well, even on a real E3D hot end. I just don't think the top of the silicone doesn't have enough lip and it's very flexible and you apply it to the hot end which runs at around 250C. The first sock I used kept leaning down and was in danger of hitting the press. I took it off and replaced it early, maybe after 20 hours of printing. In the second, I wrapped a tiny piece of exposed electrical wire (other people use a zip tie and burn the plastic) and twisted the end. He held the sock with no problems. Twisting the wire is quite tricky and you have to be careful being close to the thermistor and heater wires. The third I applied with a smear (just a bit!) of high temp RTV on both ends. This seems to hold it perfectly and was less work than twisting the zip tie. Both the zip tie and RTV were tips I gleaned from reading several forums from others who were concerned the sock wouldn't stay in place. , after it went bad in a few dozen print hours to pick up some PETG right at the bottom of the nozzle. I'm not sure if it clears that tiny bit that builds up over time, but it eventually builds up enough to cause a problem. Replacing the sock solves the problem, at least for now. These items are consumables and as with all consumables, you should expect to replace them when their useful life is exceeded. A few stars deducted because sock sag can be a catastrophic problem, especially if it sags enough to allow extruded fibers to collect between the sock and the nozzle. E3D also sells a "non-professional" version that doesn't cover the entire nozzle like this one. It might actually be a safer/better alternative and I might try it after my current sock pack wears out.
