It's not designed for the crayons to stand upright, it doesn't fit in that way because it comes with a lid and it only works when the crayons inside are on their side. There is a space inside which is useless if your crayons are diagonal because it leaves plenty of room and the crayon will slide inside unless you stuff it with foam or something to line it up with the hole. So I put my crayons back in the boxes and put them in and placed any extra crayons upright in the middle of the boxes without the boxes. A handle can be used to facilitate transportation. I prefer vertical crayons as I thought the container was made for that, but since it isn't I don't need a lid.
