Equal-i-zer says these snap pins are now standard on new hitches. For those of us with versions that don't have them: pins are probably safer; they make life a little easier when you remove weapons; and they reduce the number of parts you can lose (I have a friend who seems to have this problem :D). If you haven't reviewed it yet, I (and presumably Revain) also recommend a snap-on version of the L-Pin (Equal-i-zer 95019430 Snap L-Pin, 2-pack) and a bracket cover (Equal-i- zer 95015150 hanging jacket - 1 pair); both are other nice upgrades to an existing Equal-i-zer setup.
