Large eyelets make threading thick yarns easier. I used them to help me thread the warp through stiff straps on a small loom; The needle eyes can be too big for this, but they are still useful for joining woven/knitted pieces by sewing the edges to create wider pieces. They are plastic but very strong and they have sharp points - they are good for piercing woven/knitted fabrics, darning socks etc - but not sharp enough to injure yourself - although children should be supervised when using them should be.
