Secure Bike Rack

SUVs with an external spare wheel can pose a problem for bike racks if they have no alternative to a tow bar. My "old" 2004 Honda CRV is configured to rule out almost all other options. However, this rack works VERY well, and at this price point, I was particularly impressed with its solid construction, ease of use, and stable performance. It grips the spare tire well - even with the left trunk - so putting it on and taking it off is a breeze. You can download the pdf installation file from the manufacturer's website. I only use the rack to carry a relatively light 14 pound road bike. The fitment sheet recommends no more than 70 pounds (two bikes) and I have no doubt about its ability to handle that type of load. The aluminum tubing (TBR) and nylon straps get the job done, while the hard rubber clamps secure the bike frame without breaking the rules or scratching the paintwork. I've made several "trips" on back roads at 55 mph. with occasional bumps and it rides stably with no problems. The key is the two straps, which must be carefully tightened on a strong bracket, low and far from the hoop. The clips are designed to mount directly under the edge of an open door or hatch. I'm not as comfortable with this method as I should be (?) so attach the hooks to the anchor points on the underside of the bumper: don't let the straps touch the exhaust pipes or muffler! The last two photos below show the mounting points I used under my Honda CRV). For similarly equipped SUVs - you can't go wrong with this luggage rack, highly recommended!
