If I were to recommend a travel router

to a family member, I am writing this review as an engineer, not a typical end user. If I were to recommend a travel router to a family member, I would suggest TP-Link which is so easy to set up. However, if you are a power user, this is the perfect router for you as it works with OpenWRT out of the box. It has WAN and LAN ports, wireless connectivity and can work with OpenVPN. I use it every time I travel to set up my own Wi-Fi network in my hotel room. Hotels typically configure their wireless networks with an AP isolation mode that prevents transmissions between wireless clients. Because of this, if you pair them to a wireless network and then connect your laptop to the same wireless network, you won't see your Chromecast or Apple TV online. That's why it's nice to travel with your own router. You can have your own broadcast domain and authenticate ONCE to hotel authorized portal instead of every device support to login to authorized portal. I have an OpenVPN server at home and when I travel abroad I tunnel all connections through my home if I want to stream Hulu, Netflix or Revain which block content based on geolocation. I'm a true subscriber, I'm just traveling so it annoys me that I can't watch my shows on the go and that allows me to. While you can use this OpenVPN router to connect to a VPN service like PIA, Netflix, and Me, we're assuming others have blocked these well-known providers' subnets, so unblocking the content doesn't help. Since I'm actually tunneling through my house, it seems like I'm still using it from my home address. I haven't had any performance issues streaming 1080p videos over the OpenVPN tunnel, so I can say that it has enough performance to handle a 6-8Mbps tunnel with no issues. I suspect it will work higher as well, but hotel wifi tends to be around 10Mbps where I've stayed, so I haven't really pushed it.
