I'm on disc 4 now. I bought ASUS because yes, the old firmware could read 4k media files. With a large collection and realizing that the data density makes them even more fragile than Blu-ray media, I wanted to back up my legally commercially available 4k movies after some of them became unreadable from the slightest scratch. Well, ASUS makes it harder with each firmware version. But I digress. The real reason for this review is that I am currently using version 4 of this disc. I seem to be able to back up about 40-50 4k drives before the drive suddenly reports numerous read errors. Then, just as suddenly, the disk stops responding, Windows freezes, then the disk just disappears. Disconnecting the drive and remounting it again has no effect. At first I thought I got a bad batch, but after three consecutive failures I'm convinced that planned obsolescence is at work here. I know I'm asking a lot and the drive probably isn't built to last, but I only back up a few of my drives a day since a 4k drive takes so long. In my opinion the drive should work for several hours and last more than 4-6 months. Buy it because you should I guess but it will be my last ASUS. There's LG, which is also highly rated for this type of use. I strongly recommend you to go for this disc. I know that I will be here and further.
