Started erratically on the second of nine science fair tests and broke when we finished the test

My son is doing two different science fair projects in eighth grade and needs a science thermometer. As he performed the second of nine tests, I noticed that the liquid in the thermometer looked odd. The temperature only reached 25 degrees, but the line started to look like dashes instead of a straight line. I knew there was a problem and we stopped the test. When I lifted the thermometer from above, it broke. If you look at the picture I've attached it looks like it will start loosening at about 10 degrees. The starting temperature was actually 20 degrees; weak point - 10 degrees; and the liquid filling inside continued to increase even after the rupture. The good thing, of course, is that it did not break into a heap of fragments and did not spill anything poisonous (for example, when mercury was used for these purposes). The organic filler did not bleed either. It was good value but the buyer should keep in mind that this is a cheap thermometer so you may need it if you don't want to spend a lot of money on it. . But maybe you have the same problem as me.
