I tried the device with Gateway 3.2 GHz laptop, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB hard disk, Windows XP Professional. Installation was easy. I then tried to capture the video signal from my Sony camcorder and got an error message saying the signal was too high and couldn't be captured (the actual error message was in plain text, I just don't remember it at first). Then I got a Panasonic VHS/DVD player and started playing a VHS (NTSC) tape and got sound but no picture. After that I decided it was time to read the instructions and after a few seconds I found that the device came with the brightness and contrast set to zero via software. The capture software also has a "Default" button that sets it to reasonable values. After clicking that button, I immediately got the image. It's an awkward but small thing. Then I started recording and by default the program created a huge DVI file so I switched to an MPG file which is about 600MB per hour of recording. The rest went without incident, the thing works perfectly and in 2 hours of work it produced a 1200M mpg file playable in MS Media Player. I had to cut it in 2 parts to fit the CD. Overall I'm satisfied considering the price. The video quality (MPEG-1) is quite acceptable for backing up an old tape. The interface also seems reasonable.
