Review on πŸ”Œ D-Link DIR-878: Powerful AC1900 Smart Router for Fast Gaming and 4K Streaming, Reliable Coverage – Black by Chris Palmer

D-Link DIR-878 (and possibly other D-Link routers) does not support an SSID with a period (.) in the name

D-Link Technical Support has confirmed to me that the D- LINK AC1900 DIR model -878 MU-MIMO severely restricts SSID names. This is the first time I've had a router that didn't allow the SSID to have anything other than AZ az 0-9 dashes (-), underscores (_), and spaces in its name. Unfortunately, an SSID like "my.house" (with a dot in the name) is common. Since I have about 50 devices using my dotted SSID (most of them are smart devices), I don't want to reconfigure them all. Also, you should know that after speaking to D-Link Technical Support, they confirmed that I have the latest hardware version (A1). and firmware (1.20). They could neither confirm nor deny the existence of the same SSID name restrictions on other D-Link routers. If you search the internet for an SSID, you will find that the RFC and other standard specifications state that an SSID can be any UTF-8 character. Although this device seemed promising, I sent it back and I'll probably have to get Linksys or TP-Link. instead because D-Link couldn't say they would consider fixing this issue in their web software (i.e. the software used to make changes to the router).
