We have 8 grandchildren and are lucky enough to live on the beach. We see ourselves as experts in plastic spatulas for the beach! We bought a million of them. Deal with them - they're plastic and won't last forever, but ones with fairly strong blades and a wooden handle are good for kids ages 2-10. After that we entrust them with a real shovel. Similar looking shovels with hollow plastic handles are practically useless. These are the first models to have a plastic grip at the top of the handle and this seems like an improvement. The blade's attachment point to the handle is an important part of durability, but it's hard to tell what you're getting from pictures online. These are pretty well attached. The grandchildren love them. A final word of caution: no plastic shovel will work well in the garden unless you have super quality topsoil free of rocks, roots, and weeds. And who has it?
