Review on SRAM Rear Derailleur Black Long by Sean Davis

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Highly recommended best rear derailleur

This SRAM X-4 rear derailleur replaced my damaged 1991 SunTour rear derailleur. 4 months ago I repaired a worn Sun Tour top pulley - hard to reach idler and it works with some modifications. (Note that the SunTour hasn't ridden in decades, and forget the NOS - New Old Stock.) It was still very difficult to downshift the rear 7-speed. And I actually only had 4-5 courses that SunTour would have. So after damaging the Sun Tour and buying a SRAM X-4 last week. Received and installed yesterday. First impressions are of well-made metal construction and heavier than the Sun Tour. I had to loosen both road wheels to get the chain through. I adjusted the H, L and B screws to shift smoothly between all 7 gear sets 12-28. I did my first trip today, what's the difference. This makes upshifting and downshifting much easier and more precise. No more choke hold when downshifting (upshifting). The only problem was that sometimes it wouldn't stay in a certain gear and would shift into a higher gear. It is possible to fine tune H, L, B and the cable tension. But I can just leave it alone, if it really isn't broke don't fix it. I usually just make it worse by screwing up too much to make everything perfect. . I also use a Sram Grip. But in general I am very happy with the Sram X-4. Brought new life to my 1991 Cannondale SM-1000.
